The Philippine Basketball Association strengthened its commitment to grassroots basketball by turning over two refurbished courts in Candon City, known as the ‘Tobacco Capital of the Philippines.’ The ceremonies took place in Barangays San Isidro and Calaua-an, with Mayor Eric Singson welcoming the league’s delegates.
Commissioner Willie Marcial and Board Chairman Ricky Vargas led the turnover, marking the courts with PBA 50 stickers on the backboards and painting the league logo at center court. The refurbishment was supported by Rain or Shine Elasto Painters and sponsors including ArenaPlus, Pocari Sweat, Molten, Daily Fantasy, Healthy and Pure Brand, LGR, and Tinapayan Festival.

The event drew additional excitement with appearances from the PBA Rookies/Sophomores and Junior players, along with participants from the All-Star weekend Skills Challenge. Vice Mayor Atty. Kristelle B. Singson shared her hopes that the city could one day produce PBA players.
Vargas encouraged local youth to embrace sports, emphasizing the positive impact of athletic activity on communities. “Sports always brings us good news. And the PBA brings good news here in Candon City,” he said.
Marcial reflected on discussions with Mayor Singson in 2023 that led to Candon City hosting the All-Star weekend and game during the PBA’s 50th anniversary. “At sinasabi ko sa inyo, hindi lang dito nagtatapos ang PBA. Babalik at babalik sa Candon City ang PBA,” he said.
Basketball clinics inspire local youth
Simultaneously, basketball clinics were held at the Candon City Arena featuring San Miguel coach Leo Austria, nine-time MVP June Mar Fajardo, and other All-Star players from both the North and South squads. Young athletes had the chance to learn skills and drills directly from PBA stars. The clinics focused on basic fundamentals, shooting techniques, and teamwork exercises designed to engage all participants regardless of age or experience level.
The Rookies/Sophomores and Junior squad members actively demonstrated drills while offering personal tips to the youth, encouraging discipline, persistence, and passion for the game. The interaction created an environment where young players could ask questions, try new moves, and experience firsthand the standards required to play at a professional level.
Later in the afternoon, players from the Rookies/Sophomores and Junior squads explored Candon City’s cultural landmarks, including the Dario Museum, the Carino Ancestral House, and the Candon City Aquarium Park. These visits complemented the sports activities by providing educational and cultural exposure, highlighting a holistic approach to community engagement.
PBA’s impact on community development
The PBA’s activities in Candon City extended beyond court turnovers and clinics, creating a lasting impact on local youth and the wider community. By bringing professional players and coaches to Barangays San Isidro and Calaua-an, the league provided a tangible example of career pathways in sports and inspired young athletes to pursue their dreams.
The refurbished courts now offer a safe, modern, and accessible space for daily practice and community games, ensuring that the local population benefits from ongoing opportunities to engage in organized sports. PBA’s presence reinforced the message that dedication, teamwork, and persistence are crucial values both on and off the court, empowering the youth to apply these lessons in their personal and academic lives.
