The Philippine national women’s team is gearing up to take on a highly skilled South Korea squad on Thursday, March 6, at the Cbus Super Stadium in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026. After opening their campaign with a 0-1 loss to host Australia, the Filipinas are determined to bounce back and prove their mettle on the continental stage. Coach Mark Torcaso emphasized the team’s strength lies in their relentless fight and determination, a quality that carried them to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Torcaso highlighted that their preparations are supported by the Philippine Football Federation and the Philippine Sports Commission, underscoring the structured effort behind the Filipinas’ continued rise in women’s football.

South Korea shows technical dominance in opening match

South Korea, also known as the Taeguk Ladies, demonstrated their experience and technical skill in a 3-0 victory over Iran on Monday, March 3. Choe Yu-ri opened the scoring in the 37th minute, while Kim Hye-ri and Ko Yoo-jin added two more in the second half, scoring in the 59th and 75th minutes.

Taeguk Ladies coach Shin Sang-woo noted that while his squad won, the players showed signs of nerves in the opening stages against Iran. “I’d like to thank all my players as we achieved victory, but we need to be more clinical, and I am a bit disappointed today. Our players were quite nervous because this was our first match,” said Shin. Despite this, the team’s high possession of 79% and limiting Iran to only three shots showed why they remain a dangerous opponent.

Filipinas aim for resilience against Taeguk Ladies

The Philippine national women’s team will rely on their fight, determination, and World Cup experience to challenge the Taeguk Ladies on Thursday. A win would help the Filipinas recover from the opening loss to Australia and keep their semifinal hopes alive. Torcaso believes that mental toughness and tactical discipline will be key against a technically strong South Korea side.

With South Korea’s possession-based approach and high skill level, the Filipinas must stay alert, maximize their opportunities, and apply pressure in transitions to create scoring chances. The clash promises to test the Filipinas’ cohesion and resilience at the highest level of Asian women’s football.
