World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz overcame cramps and a determined comeback from world No. 3 Alexander Zverev to win a grueling five-set Australian Open semifinal on Friday, January 30. Alcaraz triumphed 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4), 7-5 in a match that lasted five hours and 27 minutes at Melbourne Park.

The match appeared under Alcaraz’s control early, as he surged to a two-set lead. Zverev’s persistence, however, shifted momentum midway through the third set when Alcaraz experienced cramps in his right quadriceps. Zverev capitalized and built a break advantage in the fifth set, forcing the match into a nail-biting conclusion.

Despite physical challenges, Alcaraz displayed incredible resilience. He countered Zverev’s aggressive play with precise drop shots, well-timed serves, and strategic shot placement. Even when under pressure and fatigued, the 22-year-old Spaniard managed to regain control in critical moments.

Alcaraz battles cramps and Zverev’s comeback

Alcaraz faced a significant test as Zverev pressed for every point. The Spaniard’s cramps prompted a medical timeout, which frustrated Zverev but did not stop Alcaraz from executing his game plan. The third and fourth sets extended into tense tiebreaks, testing both players’ stamina and focus.

The fifth set showcased Alcaraz’s mental and physical fortitude. Twice, he faced potential set points against him, yet his composure and tactical play kept him in contention. Zverev’s efforts to close out the match were met with exceptional shot-making from Alcaraz, who eventually sealed victory with a decisive serve and unyielding determination.

With this win, Alcaraz advances to the Australian Open final, where he will face either defending champion Jannik Sinner or 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic. The match marks one of Alcaraz’s most memorable victories, solidifying his status as a rising force in tennis.
