The Philippines’ hosting of the first FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup 2025 marked a defining moment for the country’s sporting landscape, underscoring its capability to deliver a global event while championing women’s sports.

Beyond logistics and competition, the tournament reflected Filipino values of unity, pride, and collective effort, leaving an imprint that extends far beyond the final whistle.

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) paid tribute to the hundreds of individuals whose behind-the-scenes work powered the success of the landmark event, describing the World Cup as a shared achievement for the nation and for women’s futsal worldwide.

Government backing played a crucial role, with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos lending full support through the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), led by Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio, alongside government personnel and auxiliary units deployed throughout the tournament.

PFF President John Gutierrez commended the workforce behind the scenes, saying the event proved that Filipinos can host competitions that meet the highest international standards.

Leadership and volunteer power behind the scenes

PFF General Secretary Gelix Mercader, who headed the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), highlighted the contribution of nearly 300 volunteers, 150 LOC staff, and 100 auxiliary personnel who sustained operations from preparation through match days.

Mercader described the experience as humbling, dedicating the success of the inaugural World Cup to futsal and football players across the country who laid the foundation for the sport’s growth.

The PFF also acknowledged the support of the Philippine Olympic Committee under President Abraham Tolentino and FIFA Council Member Mariano “Nonong” Araneta Jr., whose backing strengthened confidence in staging the historic event.

PSC Chairman Gregorio, though newly appointed, emerged as a key driver of the tournament, ensuring swift coordination and support for the PFF. He was joined by PSC Commissioners Walter Torres, Bong Coo, Edward Hayco and Matthew Gaston, along with Executive Director Atty. Guillermo Iroy, in steering the government’s Inter-Agency Task Force.

Government unity and a lasting futsal legacy

The PSC-led Inter-Agency Task Force brought together multiple government agencies, including DILG, DOT, DFA, DOF, DBM, DOH, DICT, DPWH, DOTr, PNP, BOI, MMDA, NICA, NBI, IPOPHL and PCO, creating a coordinated environment that reflected bayanihan in action.

With the PhilSports Arena serving as the tournament’s sole competition venue, the PSC is now studying the possibility of designating it as a permanent futsal facility, building on its transformation into a world-class stage during the World Cup.

The LOC, chaired by Gutierrez and led operationally by Mercader, worked under the oversight of PFF leadership, including Vice President Lawrence Fortun, Deputy General Secretary Kevin Goco, and Government Relations Head Isabella Fernando. UAAP Football Commissioner Rely San Agustin served as tournament director during the preparatory phase.

Gutierrez said the tournament was guided by shared accountability and disciplined leadership, emphasizing responsible use of public resources and adherence to global standards.

In total, 155 core LOC members carried the weight of months-long preparations, ensuring operational excellence, meticulous documentation, and effective knowledge transfer, helping secure a legacy that positions Philippine football for future international hosting duties.
