Gilas Pilipinas booked a return trip to the SEA Games women’s basketball gold-medal match on Thursday, Dec. 18, following a 66-55 victory over Indonesia in the semifinals at Nimibutr Stadium. The Filipinas relied on a dominant first half to seize control and never relinquish it.

Kacey dela Rosa once again anchored the Philippines with a massive all-around performance, finishing with 21 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, and four blocks. Afril Bernardino and Janine Pontejos provided steady support as Gilas dictated the tempo early.

The Filipinas broke the game open in the second quarter, building a commanding 37-18 lead at one point. Indonesia attempted to mount a comeback, but Gilas consistently answered to keep the defending champions at arm’s length.

Head coach Patrick Aquino credited the team’s sharp opening for setting the tone. He noted that overcoming their tendency for slow starts allowed Gilas to withstand Indonesia’s physical push later in the game.

First-half control sets the tone

The Philippines executed efficiently on both ends in the opening quarters, capitalizing on stops and converting in transition. Defensive pressure disrupted Indonesia’s rhythm and limited clean scoring chances.

Dela Rosa’s presence inside altered shots and ignited fast breaks, while Bernardino and Pontejos knocked down timely baskets. The balanced attack allowed Gilas to maintain separation even as the pace slowed in the second half.

Indonesia threatened in spurts, but the Filipinas stayed composed, matching physicality with discipline. Key stops in the fourth quarter ensured the lead never dipped into single digits during crunch time.

One win away from gold

Bernardino finished with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks, while Pontejos added 10 points. Their contributions underscored Gilas’ depth heading into the final.

The Philippines will play for gold on Friday at the same venue against either host Thailand or Malaysia. The Filipinas are aiming to reclaim the title they lost in Cambodia two years ago.

Gilas is seeking its third gold medal in the last four SEA Games editions, having previously ruled the tournament in 2019 and 2021. Another victory would further cement the program’s status as a regional powerhouse.
