Godwin Langbayan brought home the first jiu jitsu medal for the Philippines in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, defeating teammate Rajae Dwight Del Rosario, 21-16, in the men’s -62kg fighting class at the Ronnaphakat Building in Bangkok Wednesday, Dec. 10.
The 36-year-old veteran secured the podium finish after a day where Filipino athletes fell short in other men’s and women’s jiu jitsu divisions, including the duo classic event. Langbayan’s victory added a second SEA Games medal to his career following a bronze in kun bokator at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.

Langbayan overcomes setbacks to earn bronze
Langbayan began the day with a narrow loss to Vietnam’s Le Kien, 14-14, after a penalty for an uncontrolled punch in the final seconds. Undeterred, he bounced back in the repechage round, winning via ippon against Laos’ Khamkeo Vilayphone. His resilience and tactical approach ensured a podium finish for the Philippines.
Facing a teammate in the medal match, Langbayan acknowledged the intensity of the bout. “Against sa teammate natin, wala pa ring bigayan kasi nag-iisang medal lang ‘yung kukunin natin so best of the best na lang ‘yung ginawa namin,” he said, highlighting the competitive spirit that defined his day.
