Ateneo de Manila University secured its second consecutive win in the 2025 V-League Collegiate Challenge after outlasting National University in four sets, 25-18, 25-23, 26-28, 25-21, on Saturday, August 16, at the Paco Arena Sports and Events Center in Manila.
Amil Pacinio once again led the Blue Eagles with a dominant 20-point performance, proving why he is among the country’s top collegiate opposite hitters. Pacinio came through late, posting two crucial blocks against NU rookie Yuan Mendoza in the fourth set. Team captain Jian Salarzon then delivered Ateneo’s last four points — a solo block on Jan Abanilla and three straight kills — to seal the victory in one hour and 49 minutes.
Pacinio and Salarzon power Ateneo’s late push
The Blue Eagles opened strong, taking advantage of NU’s shaky passing, as setter Ejira Taluban orchestrated plays effectively. While NU adjusted in the middle sets with playmaker Jeffe Gallego and the spark from Mendoza, Ateneo’s veterans rose to the occasion when it mattered most. Salarzon finished with 10 points, including two blocks, while Julio Yu added 11 markers and five excellent receptions.
Head coach Vince Mangulabnan credited his players’ commitment to the game plan but reminded them of the importance of composure under pressure. “May times pa rin talaga sila na naglalaro na lang nang sarili, pero thankful ako na tinutulungan nila kong mag-remind. Hoping ako na mag-stick pa rin sa game plan namin,” Mangulabnan said.
NU’s efforts fall short despite spark from rookies
The defending UAAP champions refused to go down easily, taking the third set behind Mendoza’s energy and Bandola’s early scoring. Bandola tallied 13 points in three sets, while Abanilla added 10. Mendoza chipped in seven points and five digs. Despite the fightback, the Bulldogs couldn’t contain Pacinio and Salarzon’s finishing blows in the fourth.
The Blue Eagles improved to a 2-2 record, while NU absorbed a tough loss, unable to sustain their momentum after forcing a fourth set.
