Sydney Sy is set to lead the Philippines’ medal campaign in the 11th Asia-Oceania Sambo Championships, with the world No. 1 in the women’s +80-kilogram sport sambo division confirming her participation in the continental event starting Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
Her entry strengthens the host nation’s bid in a tournament expected to draw over 500 athletes from 31 countries under the Sambo Union of Asia and Oceania. The competition is presented by the Philippine Sports Commission and supported by national sports bodies.

The Filipino standout is the reigning champion in her division, having captured gold in the previous edition after defeating Mongolia’s Buyanzaya Ser-Ochir in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Her return places her among the top medal favorites once again.
Family and Home Advantage
Sy’s preparation received a major boost with the return of her father, Pilipinas Sambo Federation president Paolo Tancontian, who has resumed full involvement in tournament preparations after recovering from health concerns. His presence has allowed Sy to focus fully on her competition buildup.
The Davao City native expressed gratitude for her father’s improved condition, noting that it has helped stabilize her training environment ahead of the high-stakes event. She also emphasized confidence in her readiness after reviewing the tournament draw.
Tancontian, who also serves as head of the International Sambo Federation Athletes’ Commission, believes Sy has a strong chance of defending her crown with the added advantage of home support. He stressed that competing in Manila brings a significant morale boost for the national team.
The elder Tancontian also underscored the importance of fan support, encouraging the public to attend the four-day tournament at affordable ticket prices set at P100. He described the event as both a showcase of elite sambo and an opportunity to rally behind Filipino athletes.
Medal Chase Intensifies
The Philippines enters the competition with momentum after producing strong results in the previous edition, where Sy and Aislynn Yap both captured gold medals in their respective divisions. The team now aims to build on that success in front of a home crowd.
Sy’s participation is seen as a major factor in the country’s medal campaign, given her top global ranking and consistent international performances. Her presence adds depth and confidence to the national squad competing across multiple weight classes.
Officials expect a highly competitive field, but Sy remains focused on defending her title and sustaining her winning form. With strong local support and familiarity with the environment, she is positioned as one of the standout athletes of the tournament.
Fans who cannot attend the live event can still follow the action through sambo.live and official livestreams on PSC and Pilipinas Sambo Federation digital platforms.
