Dhenver John Castillo continued to elevate Philippine sports on the international stage after securing a silver medal finish in the boys’ foil windsurfing event at the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China Tuesday, April 28.
Fresh off his gold medal triumph at the Southeast Asian Games, Castillo once again showcased his elite-level consistency by battling through one of the toughest fields in Asia and delivering another podium-worthy performance for Team Philippines.
The Filipino windsurfing standout finished with 39 Net points after 13 grueling heats, tying Thailand’s Wachirawit Thonup in the standings. However, Thonup ultimately secured the gold medal after edging Castillo in the decisive final race, leaving the Philippine bet with a hard-earned silver that further strengthened the country’s campaign in the 45-nation tournament.

Castillo’s latest podium finish underscored not only his personal growth as one of the nation’s brightest sailing talents but also the Philippines’ continued emergence in non-traditional sports on the broader continental stage. Against some of Asia’s best competitors, Castillo delivered composure, resilience, and technical precision under difficult weather and racing conditions.
The competition’s planned 14th race was eventually canceled due to unfavorable weather, officially sealing the final standings. China’s Wang Yiguo captured gold with a dominant showing, while Castillo proudly secured second place in what remains one of the Philippines’ strongest performances in the Games.
Castillo’s relentless preparation pays off
For Castillo, the silver medal represented the culmination of months of physically exhausting preparation, sacrifice, and mental toughness required to compete at the highest level.
“Of course, during training, it’s really hard. You have to persevere,” Castillo said. “You really put all your heart into these competitions. My family told me to always be careful, do your best, while my coaches said always stay focused.”
His words reflected the demanding journey behind every medal-winning performance, particularly in a discipline that requires exceptional balance, endurance, and technical execution.
Castillo also acknowledged the much steeper challenge presented by the Asian Beach Games compared to regional tournaments like the Southeast Asian Games.
“The competition here in China is a bit tough because it’s not just the SEA Games but you are competing against the best in Asia,” he added.
Despite narrowly missing out on gold, Castillo’s silver remains a landmark achievement that further solidifies his growing legacy in Philippine sailing and serves as a testament to the nation’s increasing competitiveness across a wider sporting spectrum.
Team Philippines sustains impressive medal surge
Castillo’s silver medal increased Team Philippines’ overall medal haul to three gold, three silver, and two bronze medals, allowing the country to maintain third place overall in the standings behind host China and second-running Thailand.
The Philippines’ sustained podium finishes across multiple sports highlight the country’s expanding depth and versatility, with athletes increasingly excelling beyond traditional sports strongholds.
Supported by the Philippine Olympic Committee under President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and the Philippine Sports Commission led by chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio, Team Philippines continues to deliver one of its strongest Asian Beach Games campaigns to date.
Castillo’s achievement serves as another powerful symbol of Philippine sports diversification, where Filipino athletes are proving they can compete and thrive against world-class opposition across a broader range of disciplines.
As the tournament continues, Castillo’s silver medal performance stands as another significant statement that Team Philippines is steadily building a larger and more formidable presence on the international sporting landscape.
