Returning star striker Sam Kerr struck with the lone goal in the 14th minute as the Australian Matildas defeated the Philippine national women’s team 1-0 at a packed 60,000-seater Perth Stadium. Despite the early setback, the Filipinas resisted further damage, holding the Matildas scoreless for the remainder of the 95-minute opener. Their defense stayed organized in the first half, while goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel’s multiple saves in the second half kept the Philippines’ qualification hopes alive in the group stage.
The Filipinas’ campaign in the tournament, supported by the Philippine Football Federation and the Philippine Sports Commission, now depends on their next two matches. “We’re disappointed that we lost a game. But, for us, it was all about fighting till the end, in every single game. I think you saw that today. I’m pleased that the team did that. We didn’t get the outcome we wanted. But, its good for us to keep going in the next two games,” said Filipinas coach Mark Torcaso, as the Matildas took the Group A lead.

Kerr, returning from injury since last September, capitalized on a series of passes initiated by Clare Wheeler’s penetration from the side and a cross to Caitlin Foord in the center. The 32-year-old striker evaded Hali Long and slammed the ball past McDaniel’s outstretched hands at the right, giving Australia the lead.
The Matildas applied constant pressure early in the first half. A long pass landed in front of Hayley Rasso, whose kick struck McDaniel’s chest before the ball crossed the line, but the goal was disallowed, leaving the score unchanged heading into halftime.
Australia had additional opportunities to extend their advantage. Stephanie Catley’s penalty attempt in the 40th minute was denied by McDaniel’s two-handed save, and Sofia Wunsch disrupted Foord’s charge from the left, maintaining the Filipinas’ defensive resilience.
McDaniel shines in goal
In the second half, McDaniel continued her strong performance, accounting for 18 saves to keep the Filipinas competitive. The goalkeeper’s effort prevented the Matildas from doubling their lead and preserved the team’s morale heading into their next game. The Filipinas managed to hold their shape defensively and limit the Australians’ attacking chances, showing determination and cohesion across the backline.
The Filipinas will next face South Korea on Thursday at the Gold Coast Stadium. Maintaining composure and defensive discipline will be critical as they aim to stay in contention in Group A. The team has emphasized learning from this game to improve both strategy and execution in the upcoming matches.
Matildas take control
Australia controlled possession for much of the match, testing the Filipinas’ backline repeatedly. Kerr’s goal proved decisive, and the Matildas’ sustained pressure limited the Philippines’ offensive opportunities. Despite the dominance, the Filipinas remained organized and created several chances of their own, keeping the match competitive throughout.
The Filipinas also benefited from moments of counterattack, but the Matildas’ defensive adjustments prevented them from capitalizing. Coach Torcaso highlighted the team’s resilience and the importance of fighting until the final whistle. The experience gained will be crucial for the next two group-stage fixtures.
