The PLDT High Speed Hitters are steadily shaping the look of a contender in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference. Three matches into the tournament, their blend of firepower and floor discipline continues to deliver results.
PLDT turned back the Akari Chargers, 25-22, 25-27, 25-21, 25-15, on Thursday, Feb. 19, leaning heavily on its defensive system to remain unbeaten at 3-0. While the offense produced when needed, it was the High Speed Hitters’ structure on the floor that ultimately wore down the Chargers.
Libero Kath Arado spearheaded that effort with 26 excellent digs and 10 receptions. Her steady presence helped PLDT wrest control in the third and fourth sets where the match finally tilted for good.

“Defense talaga ang foundation ng pattern namin,” said Arado after earning Best Player of the Game honors. “Alam naming hindi magiging madali lalo na’t defense-oriented din ang Akari. Lahat sila gumagalaw at lumalaban, kaya kailangan talagang tyaga at mahabang pasensya.”
Defense steadies PLDT after second-set test
PLDT’s patience was pushed in the second frame when Akari, behind Mary Rhose Dapol and Jyne Soreño, extended rallies and forced a drawn-out battle. The Chargers showed improved fight despite still searching for their first win of the conference.
Instead of unraveling, the High Speed Hitters regrouped and leaned even harder on their defensive identity. Their floor coverage tightened and their transition game sharpened, allowing them to regain control in the third set.
From there, PLDT turned the fourth frame into a composed closeout. The victory enabled the High Speed Hitters to keep pace with the Nxled Chameleons at the top of the standings with identical 3-0 records.
Balanced offense complements the defensive wall
Savi Davison still emerged with a game-high 18 points despite being tracked closely by Akari libero Justine Jazareno. Her ability to produce under pressure underscored PLDT’s offensive depth.
Kim Dy and Majoy Baron added 14 points each, while Mika Reyes and Alleiah Malaluan chipped in 10 apiece. Jovie Prado contributed six markers in the nearly two-hour contest.
Although Akari finished with a slight edge in attacks, 60-59, PLDT imposed its will at the net with 13 blocks. Baron led the way with a conference-high seven rejections, highlighting the High Speed Hitters’ control in the middle.
PLDT also capitalized on Akari’s 23 errors while committing just 14 of its own. The numbers reinforced the team’s growing reputation for discipline and structure early in the conference.
