Madison Keys defeated rising Czech star Tereza Valentova 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the Adelaide International quarterfinals on Wednesday, Jan. 14, in Adelaide. The world No. 9 struggled early with seven double faults and two service breaks but regained her composure to dominate the second set.

Keys’ recovery was marked by improved serving and constant pressure on Valentova, turning the momentum decisively in her favor. Valentova, 18, showed early promise but could not sustain the pace against the seasoned Australian Open champion.

“It was a match where I had to take my chances and shift momentum,” Keys said. “Being the veteran here, I had to rely on experience and raise my level when it mattered most.”

Keys finds rhythm after shaky start

In the second set, Keys displayed her championship experience, converting key points and maintaining control throughout. Her performance highlighted why she remains one of the top contenders on the WTA Tour.

Keys has previously found success at the Adelaide International, winning the title in 2025 before going on to claim her first Grand Slam weeks later. Her ability to overcome adversity against Valentova reinforced her status as a top competitor.

Quarterfinal showdown set

Keys will face Canada’s Victoria Mboko in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Jan. 15. Mboko, ranked 17th, provides the next challenge as Keys seeks to continue her winning streak and maintain momentum heading into the Australian Open.

The matchup promises another high-stakes contest as Keys looks to extend her dominance on the Australian summer circuit. Fans will be watching to see if she can convert her experience into another decisive performance.
