World number one Aryna Sabalenka secured her 22nd career singles title and first of 2026 by defeating Marta Kostyuk in the Brisbane International final on Sunday, Jan. 11. Sabalenka beat the world number 26, 6-4, 6-3, in one hour and 18 minutes to claim her second consecutive Brisbane crown.

The win capped a flawless tournament for Sabalenka, who did not drop a set in her five matches at the Australian Open warm-up event. She became the third woman in the tournament’s 17-year history to win back-to-back Brisbane titles and improved her record in Australia since the start of 2023 to 38 wins and two losses.

Sabalenka dominates early

Sabalenka broke Kostyuk’s serve in the opening games of both sets, establishing 3-0 leads. Kostyuk fought back in the first set but could not recover in the second. Sabalenka’s consistency and aggressive baseline play kept her in control throughout the match.

Her service games were nearly flawless, highlighted by an ace down the middle to set up championship points. Sabalenka converted the first with a wide serve that Kostyuk could not return, showcasing her precision under pressure.

The Ukrainian tried to counter with aggressive returns, but Sabalenka’s dominance on both wings made it impossible to shift momentum. Each rally tested Sabalenka’s stamina and skill, and she responded with tactical shots that kept Kostyuk on the defensive.

Eyes on the Australian Open

The victory provides a strong lead-up for Sabalenka as she aims for her third Australian Open title in four years, with the main draw beginning in Melbourne on Jan. 18. The Brisbane win gives her confidence and rhythm heading into one of the sport’s biggest stages.

Sabalenka also demonstrated her adaptability, adjusting her strategy mid-match to counter Kostyuk’s speed and baseline aggression. The title adds to her growing dominance in Australia and cements her status as a top contender for the Grand Slam.

With five straight wins without dropping a set, Sabalenka has established momentum that could carry her deep into the upcoming tournament. Her performance in Brisbane sends a clear message to the rest of the field: she is ready and in top form.
