The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has tapped Tayabas town in Quezon as CALABARZON’s new regional training center after signing a Usufruct Agreement with the provincial government for the use of a 10-hectare property in Barangay Baguio.
A multi-purpose sports complex will be developed on the site, starting with a track and field oval, football field, gymnasium, training center, and softball and baseball diamonds. Additional facilities are planned to expand the town’s capacity as a hub for both grassroots and elite sports.
Project to revive softball and baseball tradition
Quezon Governor Helen Tan said the project will strengthen sports development in the region and provide more opportunities for CALABARZON athletes.
PSC Chairman Pato Gregorio emphasized plans to position the site as a softball and baseball hub, reviving the Philippines’ long tradition in the sports. “Mahilig kasi ang Quezon, Batangas, Cavite, at Laguna sa softball,” Gregorio said. “So, gagawin natin itong softball at baseball hub. Dito magte-training ang national team, dito gaganapin ang mga competition, at dito rin maglalaro ang mga bata.”
Initiative aligns with national sports directive
The project supports President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive to make sports more accessible within communities and expand grassroots platforms for developing future national athletes.
Meanwhile, Candon City Mayor Eric Singson expressed interest in establishing a national training center for archery in partnership with the PSC and World Archery Philippines.
