This three-day event aims to celebrate the achievements of female athletes, bring the prestigious FIBA Asia Cup trophy closer to fans, and honor the growing legacy of women’s basketball in the country.
The FIBA Asia Cup Trophy Tour: A Symbol of Pride and Excellence
The journey kicks off on June 16 with an exclusive press conference hosted by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) at Buffalo’s Wings ‘N Things in Pasay City. The event, set to begin at 10:00 AM, will be an invite-only gathering, drawing members of the media, Gilas Pilipinas Women’s team, and various guests. This momentous occasion marks the start of a celebration that combines basketball excellence with a sense of national pride.
As the FIBA Asia Cup Trophy makes its way through the Philippines, it will not only symbolize sporting achievement but also reflect the country’s rich basketball culture and its ever-growing passion for women’s basketball.
Malolos: A Hometown Tribute
On June 17, the FIBA Asia Cup Trophy will travel to the heart of Malolos, Bulacan, home to one of the national team’s standout players, Jack Animam. A motorcade will take the trophy through the city streets, passing by the City Hall before reaching the iconic Barasoain Church. This event, filled with local pride, honors the achievements of Animam, who has become a basketball heroine in her hometown. The city will come together to celebrate not just her success but also the recognition of women’s basketball at a national level.
A Campus Tour: Fostering Future Talent
On June 18, the tour will continue with a visit to various universities across Metro Manila that have played a crucial role in shaping the future of women’s basketball in the Philippines.
The first stop is at De La Salle University (DLSU) along Taft Avenue, the alma mater of Gilas sharpshooter Khate Castillo. Fans will get the chance to see the trophy displayed in front of the St. La Salle Building, which has become a symbol of pride for DLSU’s athletics program.
From DLSU, the trophy will head to the National University (NU), where the Lady Bulldogs, a powerhouse in women’s basketball, have amassed eight championships over the past decade. NU has been instrumental in the success of the Gilas Women’s Basketball Team, producing top-tier players such as Afril Bernardino and Jack Animam.
The next stop will be the University of Santo Tomas (UST), a historic institution where Gilas skipper Kent Pastrana continues to showcase her competitive edge. The trophy will be displayed near the Arch of the Centuries, a central landmark that stands as a reminder of UST’s long-standing support for women’s sports.
Ateneo de Manila University is the following destination, where the trophy will be showcased at the Blue Eagle Gym. Here, rising star Kacey Dela Rosa, alongside SEA Games multi-medalist Katrina Guytingco, represents the bright future of women’s basketball in the Philippines.
Finally, the tour will make its way to the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman. The iconic Oblation statue will serve as the backdrop for the FIBA Asia Cup Trophy, marking the university’s continued contributions to women’s basketball. Gilas players Camille Nolasco and Louna Ozar are proud to represent UP and its commitment to the sport.
