Barangay Ginebra played with fiery intent and total control, routing TNT Tropang Giga, 97-78, in a crucial victory that strengthened its Top Four standing in the PBA Philippine Cup 2025 elimination round Sunday night at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Ginebra explodes early and never looks back
Japeth Aguilar spearheaded a blistering 30-11 first-quarter burst that stunned the Tropang Giga and immediately set the tone for the night. Ginebra’s suffocating start resulted in a 54-27 halftime advantage, with the Gin Kings executing with precision while holding TNT to just 31.4 percent shooting in the opening half.
Aguilar recorded a dominant double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. RJ Abarrientos came off the bench to lead all scorers with 23 points, while Stephen Holt, Jamie Malonzo, and Troy Rosario added 12, 12, and 11 points, respectively. Scottie Thompson provided his usual stability as Ginebra’s first five completely outclassed the Tropang Giga.
Ginebra avenges previous Finals losses
Ginebra’s wire-to-wire win was a measure of revenge, as TNT had previously beaten them in both the Governors’ Cup and Commissioner’s Cup finals. But this time, it was the Gin Kings who dismantled their rival in dominant fashion.
With the win, Ginebra improved to 7-3, tying Magnolia for third place and staying within reach of leaders NLEX (8-2) and San Miguel Beer (7-2). TNT, who had won six straight entering the game, dropped to 6-4 and fell into a three-way tie for fifth with Rain or Shine and Converge.
TNT’s momentum halted despite new acquisition
TNT’s offense sputtered under Ginebra’s pressure. Calvin Oftana eventually found his rhythm and finished with 18 points, but he was scoreless in the first half. Jordan Heading, acquired recently from Converge for Mikee Williams, debuted with 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, watching from the sidelines, could only see his former team crumble against a Ginebra side determined to dominate every possession.
Ginebra will wrap up its elimination round against Rain or Shine on June 15, while TNT faces Magnolia on June 13 in a must-win contest.
