Geoff Thompson, a globally respected sports leader and advocate for youth development, has made a highly anticipated return to the University of East London (UEL) after a seven-year absence. His reappearance at the One Newham Conference marks a significant turning point, reigniting discussions on the role of sports in empowering communities and addressing youth violence.
His return follows his controversial removal as Chair of the University and the eviction of the Dame Mary Glen Haig Sport for Development for Peace Office from the UEL campus. Now, with a renewed mission, Thompson is calling for collective action to support young people and create lasting social change.

Reviving the 2012 Olympic legacy for youth empowerment
Speaking at the One Newham Conference, Thompson urged individuals and organizations to harness the spirit of the 2012 Olympic Games, emphasizing the importance of leveraging its legacy for positive change.
“The 2012 Games were not just about sports; they were a catalyst for change,” Thompson declared. “We have a unique opportunity to empower our youth by providing them with the tools, resources, and support necessary to thrive. It is time for us to come together, to invest in our young people, and to build a brighter future.”
Thompson envisions a comprehensive approach to youth engagement, combining sports, education, and community-driven initiatives. Through the Youth Charter’s Community Campus, he aims to establish safe and inclusive spaces where young people can develop skills, connect with mentors, and unlock their full potential.
A united front against youth violence
One of the most pressing issues Thompson addressed was the rising levels of youth violence in communities. He stressed the urgent need for collaboration between local authorities, educational institutions, and community organizations to implement sustainable solutions.
“We must unite our efforts and share our resources to create a sustainable impact,” Thompson stated. “Together, we can turn the tide and inspire a generation to pursue positive pathways.”
His vision extends beyond sports, advocating for holistic community development that integrates mentorship, education, and economic opportunities for young people.
A call to action for the future of sports leadership
With the upcoming IOC Presidential election, Thompson sees a key opportunity for advancing sport for development and peace initiatives. He highlighted Lord Sebastian Coe as a prospective candidate who understands the importance of leveraging sports for social good.
“He launched our ‘Call2Action,’ and if successful, I will be calling on him to activate our plans,” Thompson affirmed.
His Call2Action initiative seeks to mobilize leaders in sports governance to commit to youth-focused development strategies, ensuring that major sporting events leave a lasting positive impact on communities.
As Thompson embarks on this new chapter, he invites stakeholders from all sectors to join him in building a legacy of empowerment, resilience, and hope. Through collaboration and strategic investment in youth, he believes that sport can continue to be a powerful force for social transformation.
