Indigenous Peoples Games: A step toward institutionalization in General Santos City

The Indigenous Peoples Games (IP Games) – Mindanao Leg concluded on a hopeful note, paving the way for its future institutionalization as an annual tournament. This event aims to celebrate and preserve the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples and various tribes in the region.

Over the course of the two-day tournament, eight participating tribes showcased their talents in ten traditional sports, bringing together more than 350 participants. The event not only fostered a sense of community but also offered an opportunity for competitors to experience the joy of winning medals and participating in meaningful competition.

Dante Canacan, a standout athlete who clinched two gold medals in Gampi (Pana) and Fire Making, expressed gratitude for the support received during the tournament. “We are thankful to everyone who helped organize this tournament for us, the indigenous peoples. It not only aids us but also allows us to showcase our culture and heritage,” Canacan stated.

During the closing ceremony, General Santos City Councilor Ric Trinidad announced plans to pass a resolution aimed at institutionalizing the IP Games. This initiative, in collaboration with the Philippine Sports Commission, seeks to preserve the rich culture and traditions of the indigenous community.

The Mindanao leg of the IP Games was hosted at the Antonio Acharon Sports Complex, marking the third and final segment of the event, coinciding with the celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Month.

Participating municipalities, including Alabel, Glan, Kiamba, Maasim, Maitum, Malapatan, and Malungon, showcased their athletic prowess in various traditional sports such as Gamti (Pana), Fire Making, Kasing (Trompo), Skuya (Takbo), Kadang Kadang, Kmahung (Swimming Relay), Tug of War, Bangkaw (Spear Throw), Bayo sa Palay, and Sudol.

The success of this event underscores the commitment to ensuring that the traditions and skills of indigenous peoples are not only recognized but celebrated, fostering a sense of pride and community for future generations. The Indigenous Peoples Games stand as a beacon of hope for the continued preservation and promotion of the vibrant cultures of Mindanao’s indigenous tribes.
