Asian Games 2023: Rosegie Ramos falls in weightlifting

Rosegie Ramos of the Philippines came up empty-handed in the country’s opening bid in weightlifting at the 2023 Asian Games on Saturday, September 30.

The 19-year-old pride of Zamboanga City lifted 87 kilograms in her third snatch attempt and registered 103 in the clean and jerk for an effort of 190 in the total to finish fifth in the women’s 49kg class on Saturday at the Xiaoshan Sports Centre Gymnasium.

North Korea’s Songgum Ri ruled the category in record-breaking fashion, resetting the world standard in the snatch as well as in the clean and jerk.

Ri’s lift of 124 in the clean and jerk and her 216 total are now registered as new world records.

China’s Jiang Huihua settled for the silver medal after posting an Asian Games record of 94 in the snatch and 119 in the clean and jerk that totaled 213.

Thanyathon Sukcharoen of Thailand completed the medal stage with a 191 total build on the strength of her 90 in the snatch and 109 in the clean and jerk.

John Febuar Ceniza is scheduled on Sunday in the men’s 61kg before Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo and Tokyo Olympian Elreen Ann Ando (women’s 64kg) see action on Monday.

Former Asian champion Vanessa Sarno, who suffered from an injured elbow in the recent 2023 World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will compete in the women’s 76kg on Oct. 5
