Ateneo de Manila University took the fight out of University of the Philippines in straight sets fashion, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19, for a good end to its UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball first round on Sunday, Mar. 19, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
The Blue Eagles continued to hold the fifth spot at 3-4 while sending the Fighting Maroons to their sixth straight loss to stay winless.
“Very happy and thankful na we were able to win our last game sa first round and hopefully we can bring this momentum to the second round,” said Ateneo head coach Timmy Sto. Tomas.
Jian Salarzon’s two consecutive off-the-block kills shut the door on UP’s comeback attempt in the second canto, 25-21.
Salarzon was at the forefront of Ateneo’s offense with 17 points on 14 attacks and three blocks while Abai Llenos contributed 15 points and 14 excellent receptions.
Ken Batas got 11 points while middle blockers Jetlee Gopio and Charles Absin both managed five points.
Season 82 high school boys MVP Ranz Cajolo led the Fighting Maroons with nine points off the bench.
Rus Ijiran, Jessie Rubin, and Daniel Nicolas all had seven points apiece while Louis Gamban made six.
UP will next face Adamson University on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in a battle of winless teams.
