National University Nazareth School and Far Eastern University-Diliman, both seeking to achieve a three-peat and win their first-ever UAAP championship, respectively, arranged a Finals rematch after defeating their respective opponents in the UAAP Season 85 High School Boys’ Volleyball Final Four on Thursday, Mar. 16, at Paco Arena.
The Bullpups, who are the reigning back-to-back champions, defeated University of Santo Tomas, 25-14, 25-18, 21-25, 25-15, to earn a shot at a fifth title in the league in six years.
“We actually prepared many options because they have many injuries, and at the same time, some players are not playing well. That’s why we need to apply what we did in practice in the game,” said NUNS coach Edgar Barroga.
Throughout the game, the Bullpups relied on team captain Greg Ancheta, who played dual duties as setter and wing spiker. Eugene Gloria provided the spark on offense, while Herbert Egger was dominant at the net for the four-time champions.
Meanwhile, the Baby Tamaraws defeated University of the East, 25-20, 25-27, 25-20, 25-19, to move one step closer to their first-ever UAAP championship and secure a fourth Finals meeting against NUNS. Team captain Andrei Delicana led FEU-D with ample support from Kyle Tandoc and Amet Bituin.
“First and foremost, during the first and second round, we lost to (NSNU),” said Baby Tamaraws coach Rjay del Rosario. “So, we need to get back at them in this championship because we are also preparing for this championship.
“This is my fourth time in this championship against them. I hope we can win.”
Game 1 of the Finals is set for Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
