University of Santo Tomas recovered from a first set downer to clip Ateneo de Manila University, 21-25, 28-26, 25-21, 25-21, for its third straight win in the UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan, Wednesday, Mar. 15.
The Golden Spikers kept in step with Far Eastern University at second behind a 5-1 win-loss slate while the Blue Eagles fell to 2-4 at fifth along with University of the East.
UST will next face the Red Warriors on Saturday while Ateneo will clash with winless University of the Philippines on Sunday. Prized rookie Josh Ybanez starred for the Golden Spikers, as the 5-foot-6 open spiker exploded for 31 points on 26 attacks, three blocks and two aces to go along with 14 excellent receptions and eight digs.
Gboy de Vega backstopped him with 20 points and 18 excellent receptions while opposite spiker Jay Rack Dela Noche chipped in 13 points.
“Masaya kasi we got the W pero it could have been better kasi may game plan kami coming to this match, yung dalawang player ko sa zone 2 talagang hindi lang sumusunod,” said Golden Spikers head coach Odjie Mamon.

The trio of Ybañez, De Vega, and Dela Noche stepped it up in the fourth to finish the match in one hour and 54 minutes.
The 19-year-old spiker out of General Santos City was also clutch in the third set, capping it with an off-the-block hit and a through-the-block kill, 25-21, while Dela Noche toughened up on defense in the extended second frame with back-to-back rejections on Jian Salarzon to equalize, 28-26.
Ateneo fell to 2-4 at fifth along with University of the East.
Abai Llenos carried the fight for the Blue Eagles with 17 points, 11 digs, and nine excellent receptions, while Salarzon and Ken Batas got 15 and 10 points, respectively.
