In a thrilling display of talent, Puerto Princesa captured the U-17 Boys Futsal crown at the Batang Pinoy National Championships held at the Ramon V. Mitra Jr. Sports Complex. The team, led by the unstoppable John Kenneth Eclevia, defeated the heavily favored Negros Occidental squad 3-1 in the final.
Eclevia, known for his agility and sharp attacking instincts, delivered a hat trick in the first half with goals in the ninth, sixth, and second minutes. This stellar performance ensured Puerto Princesa’s dominance, capping off an undefeated run in the tournament.
Coach Tony Austria, who transformed his football players into futsal stars in just a month, expressed pride in his team. “We were surprised to win, especially since we started training late October,” Austria said.
Cebu City Dominates U-17 Girls Futsal Final
The U-17 Girls title was secured by Cebu City, thanks to goals from national squad members Ushin Joi Valencia and Jelena Loren Soon. Their 2-0 victory over Davao del Oro showcased their teamwork and precision, reinforcing Cebu City’s reputation as a futsal powerhouse.
Other Highlights: U-15 Futsal, Swimming, and Badminton
In the U-15 division, Pangasinan and Olongapo City emerged victorious in the boys’ and girls’ finals, respectively. Pangasinan overcame injuries, including their goalkeeper’s, to clinch a 4-1 win over Bago City.
Swimming saw Pasig City dominate, led by Arveen Naeem Taguinota II, who secured six gold medals and was named the most outstanding swimmer of the event. Meanwhile, Mandaue City shone in badminton, taking home two golds in doubles events.
Promising Future for Philippine Futsal
Futsal tournament director Allan Ramirez noted the growing interest in the sport, with nearly 100 teams participating in the event. With the Philippines set to host the first FIFA Women’s World Futsal Cup next year, this tournament reflects the sport’s bright future in the country.
