Dryx Saavedra, FEU-DN Steel’s formidable third-year opposite hitter, led his team to victory during a challenging week in the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference. Despite fierce competition, Saavedra’s standout plays helped secure FEU-DN Steel’s unbeaten record, extending their winning streak to six games.

Saavedra’s 17-point contribution was instrumental in their 25-20, 16-25, 25-16, 25-15 triumph over Martelli Meats on November 8, leaving their opponents winless. Just two days later, he delivered his best performance of the season, scoring 25 points to defeat Savouge in a thrilling five-set match (25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 17-25, 16-14), ending Savouge’s impressive four-game run.

Saavedra’s determined gameplay didn’t go unnoticed. His clutch performances and unyielding resolve under pressure earned him the prestigious Spikers’ Turf Press Corps Player of the Week award presented by Pilipinas Live, covering the period from November 6 to 10.

Reflecting on the game, Saavedra shared, “Sobrang dami naming natutunan, lalo na ‘yung kumapit kasi alam naman namin na grabe sila [Savouge] maglaro.” Savouge had recently defeated powerhouse team Cignal, which only increased the pressure on FEU to maintain their streak. Saavedra’s resilience shone through, even as he struggled with painful cramps during the match’s two-hour, 35-minute duration.

“Natuto kami mag-compose ng sarili namin,” Saavedra noted, crediting coach Ed Orcullo for keeping the team focused. The reigning V-League Men’s Collegiate Challenge Finals MVP, Saavedra previously led FEU to victory in the Collegiate Challenge, earning them a spot in the season-ending Spikers’ Turf tournament.

Despite their flawless record, Saavedra emphasizes the need for stronger finishes to sustain their momentum through the season. “Palagi naming pinag-uusapan kung bakit ganun ‘yung nagiging laro namin na makakuha lang kami ng isang set, dalawang set, parang umiiba na agad sa next set… Pangit kasi na pinapatagal pa kahit kaya naman talaga,” he reflected.

As FEU-DN Steel looks toward the championship, Saavedra’s leadership and skill will be key to sustaining their winning form. With each game, Saavedra continues to prove that FEU-DN Steel is not just a strong contender but a team with championship potential in the Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference.
