Philippines’ women’s karate team turned a lopsided semifinal loss into history on Tuesday. Rebecca Cyril Torres, Samantha Veguillas and Ysabelle Arrogante rebounded from a 0-5 shutout to Iran to claim the country’s first-ever team kata bronze at the Asian Games.

The trio edged Thailand’s Ramitar Terananon, Monsicha Sakulrattanatara and Phatcharin Plangplai, 4-1, in the bronze medal match at Toyohashi Gymnasium. The win capped a roller-coaster day for the Filipinas at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.

From Iran Shutout to Bronze Medal Comeback

The Filipinas opened the tournament in dominant fashion, sweeping Cambodia’s Sreynuch Puthea, Oun Sreyda and That Chhenghorng, 5-0. That momentum collided head-on with karate powerhouse Iran in the semifinals.

Iran shut out the Philippines, 0-5, ending any shot at gold or silver and forcing the Filipinas to regroup fast for the bronze medal bout. “Wala na kami inisip kung sino kalaban. Basta we claim sa amin ang bronze,” Arrogante said.

That resolve carried the team through against Thailand, sealing the historic result. “It has been a long journey. Dami hirap ng mga teammates. Marami losses over the years, pero perform lang, laban lang hanggang dulo,” an emotional Torres said.

Head coach Sonny Montalvo praised his athletes for the sacrifices behind the medal, noting that the trio temporarily left their families and paused their university studies just to focus on training for the Games.

Family Legacy and a Growing Asiad Streak

The team also credited its success to steady support from coaches and officials, among them the late Pocholo Veguillas, a former Karate Pilipinas president.

Veguillas was the father of Richard Lim, the federation’s current president and also Team Philippines’ chef de mission at this year’s Games. Samantha Veguillas’ bronze carries a personal connection to that family legacy.

The bronze also extends a streak for Philippine karate at the Asian Games, following medals won by Junna Tsukii in Jakarta 2018 and Sakura Alforte in Hangzhou 2023.

Alforte, an individual kata specialist, sat out this year’s edition after a new rule required all squad members to compete in the team event. “Big boost sa karate. Nakita natin magaling ang Pilipino, tiwala lang,” Montalvo said.

“Maka-inspire din ito sa delegation dito. Dami pa lalaban,” he added, pointing to the broader impact the medal could have on the rest of the Philippine delegation still competing in Nagoya.

The result also comes on the heels of good news for the program. The Philippines officially qualified for the Karate World Cup this November in Hangzhou, a day before the bronze medal win in Nagoya.

“Na-inspire kami, kaya itutuloy pa namin ito, yung magandang resulta,” Arrogante said, pointing to the World Cup berth as fresh motivation. The team now turns its focus toward building on this year’s breakthrough.
