The Philippine women’s national football team made a statement in Gifu, Japan, blanking Hong Kong, 2-0, on Thursday. The win kept the Filipinas’ Asian Games quarterfinal hopes alive and capped a night filled with individual history.

Two players etched their names into the record books during the 20th Asian Games clash. Captain Hali Long tied Phil Younghusband’s all-time cap record, while Jaclyn Sawicki reached her own milestone appearance.

Long, Sawicki Etch Names Into Philippine Football History

Long’s 108th international cap pulled her level with Younghusband, the men’s team legend and previous record holder. The 31-year-old center-back has anchored the Filipinas’ defense since 2016, becoming the backbone of the program’s rise.

Sawicki, meanwhile, earned her 50th cap in the same match. She joined defender Carleigh Frilles, who hit the same 50-cap mark just one game earlier against Uzbekistan, giving the Filipinas two milestone celebrations in back-to-back matches.

Head coach Mark Torcaso credited the veterans for setting the tone. “They are important to our march towards the World Cup,” Torcaso said of Frilles and Sawicki, adding that Long’s achievement deserved recognition too.

Leach, Ramirez Lead Filipinas Toward China Showdown

On the field, forward Skye Leach opened the scoring in the 12th minute for her first senior international goal. The strike came off a blocked header from winger Inday Tolentin, arriving in just Leach’s second cap for the national team.

Forward Mallie Ramirez doubled the lead in the 63rd minute, finishing a tight-angle cross from substitute Megan Murray. “Any goal I get to score for this national team, it’s special every time,” Ramirez said after the match.

Hong Kong pushed for a response through Leung Hong Kiu Anke, who twice came close and rattled the post in the 48th minute. Goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel and the Filipinas’ backline held firm, denying a late attempt in the 87th minute.

The result lifts the Filipinas to second place in Group G with four points, level with China on points but behind on goal difference. Hong Kong remains winless through two matches, while Uzbekistan sits third after drawing China, 1-1, earlier Thursday.

The Filipinas now turn to a decisive Group G finale against China, the 2022 bronze medalists, on September 21 at Nagaragawa Stadium. Torcaso struck a respectful tone ahead of the clash, calling China “a powerhouse” his side will prepare for fully.
