Filipinas Eye World Cup Boost in Asian Games Gauntlet

The Philippine Women’s National Football Team is treating a brutal Asian Games group as the ultimate proving ground. With China, Hong Kong, and Uzbekistan standing in their way, the Filipinas see the gauntlet as fuel for their 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup push.

The squad opens the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, running from September 14 to October 2. Philippine Football Federation President John Anthony Gutierrez thanked the players, coaching staff, government partners, and sponsors for backing the campaign.

Filipinas Target Growth Through Asian Games Fire

Head coach Mark Torcaso said the tournament falls outside the FIFA window, leaving several first-choice players unavailable. Still, he sees the gap as a chance to fast-track younger talent ahead of Brazil 2027.

“We want to try and be better than we were at the last Asian Games, which was quarterfinalist,” Torcaso said. “We’re really using the Asian Games as an opportunity for our team to grow, to be ready for the World Cup.”

The tournament also marks a full-circle moment for Torcaso, whose first assignment with the Filipinas came at the previous Asian Games. He said three years with the program have deepened his grasp of Filipino football’s identity.

Gutierrez praised the squad’s resilience heading into a stacked group. “This is a group that will test the team’s caliber, but that’s exactly where the Filipinas have always thrived,” he said.

“They don’t shy away from challenges, they fight through them,” Gutierrez added. “Hard work got them here, and that same fight will take them for another deep run.”

Roster Shakeup, Carpio’s Rise Add Storylines

The PFF confirmed last-minute roster changes ahead of the opener. Angie Beard, a key forward, was ruled out due to injury, alongside midfielder Tea Pidding and goalkeeper Gaby Rourke.

Replacing them are veteran midfielder Bhebhe Lemoran and fullback Janly Fontamillas. Teenage goalkeeper Leah Bradley also joins, giving Torcaso fresh depth on short notice.

Forward Alex Carpio, fresh off being named PFF Women’s League MVP, sees momentum in the team’s rise. “The fact that we’re able to send Filipinas to the top leagues in other countries, it’s just another sign that Philippine football is really growing,” she said.

The Filipinas open against Uzbekistan on September 14 at 1:00 p.m., then face Hong Kong on September 17 and China on September 21. All matches are at the Gifu Nagaragawa Stadium, with kickoffs in Philippine Standard Time.

After Nagoya, the team heads to a training camp in Peru in October. Torcaso called the altitude there a useful test, similar to conditions the Filipinas could face at a future World Cup.
