The Philippines just sent a message to the rest of Asia’s beach volleyball scene. This program is no longer a one-tandem operation.
Rising duo Sofiah Pagara and Khy Progella capped an unbeaten run in Busan, South Korea. They defeated veteran stars Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons in an all-Filipino final at the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Futures, delivering a historic 1-2 finish that instantly reshapes the country’s Olympic outlook.
Pagara and Progella closed out the tournament with a 21-18, 21-13 win over Rondina and Pons. The match was played under rainy conditions on Sunday afternoon.

The result gave the Philippines its first podium sweep of its kind on the international beach volleyball circuit. It arrives at a pivotal moment, too, as the country ramps up its push toward the 2026 Asian Games and, eventually, the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
A Breakout Run for the Next Generation
Pagara and Progella did not simply stumble into the final. The reigning UAAP champions won all seven of their matches in Busan, starting from the qualification round and rolling through pool play without dropping a set.
Their path to gold included a commanding quarterfinal win over Japan’s Paurine Emiri Oto and Takemi Nishibori, 21-12, 21-13. A tougher test followed in the semifinal against another Japanese pairing, Mayu Sawame and Wakana Akishige.
Pagara and Progella dropped the opening set in that match. They stormed back to win, 17-21, 21-13, 15-11, and punch their ticket to the gold-medal match.
The University of Santo Tomas duo has been building toward this moment for a while now. Pagara and Progella already own a BVR on Tour championship after winning the Sipalay leg last year.
They also topped the Philippine National Volleyball Federation Beach Volleyball Invitational back in December 2024. That event was organized by BVR at Nuvali Sand Courts in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
Veterans Rondina and Pons Keep the Program’s Foundation Strong
While the spotlight in Busan belonged to the new generation, Rondina and Pons showed exactly why they remain the standard-bearers of Philippine beach volleyball. The pair battled past Australia’s Jana Milutinovic and Jazz Rayner, 23-21, 21-19, to reach the final.
That tight scoreline reflected the physical toll of a deep tournament run. Still, the veterans found a way through.
Rondina remains the most decorated player in the group by a wide margin. She has six BVR on Tour titles to her name, including a Sipalay leg victory earlier this year alongside Dij Rodriguez.
Pons has three BVR on Tour titles of her own, all won alongside Rondina. That partnership has been dominant on the domestic circuit for years.
The duo’s résumé extends well beyond BVR events, too. Rondina and Pons swept the BVR-organized Philippine National Volleyball Federation Beach Volleyball Invitational and National Open tournaments last year.
They also helped the Philippines capture a historic women’s beach volleyball gold medal at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand. That title cemented their status as the program’s cornerstone pair.
That kind of depth is exactly what the Philippines needs as it eyes bigger targets. A proven veteran tandem and a hungry young pair now give the country two legitimate threats.
The 2026 Asian Games looms as an immediate proving ground. Olympic qualification, meanwhile, will run through continental events, the 2027 World Championships, the Olympic Ranking, and the Olympic Q-Series.
With two medal-caliber tandems now in the mix, the Philippines has real momentum. The country’s pursuit of a first-ever Olympic berth in beach volleyball suddenly looks a lot more realistic.
