Japan completed a dramatic comeback to defeat Serbia, 20-25, 26-24, 18-25, 32-30, 15-7, and close the opening day of the Volleyball Nations League Week 2 in Pasig City on Wednesday, June 17, at the PhilSports Arena. The victory kept Japan’s perfect record intact as it continued its impressive run in the prestigious international tournament.

After falling behind twice in the match, Japan responded with composure and resilience before taking complete control in the deciding fifth set. The victory improved the Japanese squad to 5-0 in the FIVB’s premier annual women’s volleyball competition.

Japan Finishes Strong

Mayu Ishikawa once again led Japan’s offense with an outstanding all-around performance, finishing with 24 points built on 23 attacks and one block. Her timely scoring proved crucial as Japan rallied in the fourth set before dominating the deciding frame.

Yukiko Wada provided strong support with 20 points, all coming from attacks. The duo combined for six of Japan’s nine attack points in the fifth set as the Japanese offense shifted into another gear while Serbia struggled to maintain its momentum.

Japan overcame a difficult challenge despite being outmatched in blocking. Serbia finished with 15 block points compared to Japan’s four, but the Japanese squad compensated with consistent attacking and composed execution during the match’s biggest moments.

Serbia Falls Short

Aleksandra Uzelac paced Serbia with 21 points, while Nina Cajic added 18 in another determined effort. Middle blocker Hena Kurtagic also contributed significantly at the net by recording five block points as Serbia repeatedly frustrated Japan’s hitters.

Despite controlling stretches of the contest and showcasing its defensive strength, Serbia was unable to sustain its level in the decisive set. The defeat dropped Serbia to 1-4 in the tournament standings after suffering its fourth loss in five matches.

The Japan-Serbia showdown capped an entertaining opening playdate of the Volleyball Nations League in Pasig City. Earlier in the day, the United States swept the Dominican Republic in straight sets before defending champion Italy defeated Czechia in another three-set contest.

The Volleyball Nations League features 18 of the world’s top women’s national teams competing across the preliminary phase, with only the top eight advancing to the Final Round in Macau.
