Defending champion Italy returned to the win column in the Volleyball Nations League after securing a 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 victory over Czechia on Wednesday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. The straight-set triumph allowed the reigning champions to quickly recover from their previous setback and strengthen their campaign in Week 2 of the tournament.
Italy displayed consistency on both ends of the court, combining an efficient attack with disciplined defense to keep Czechia at bay throughout the contest. The victory improved the Italians’ record to 4-1 in the FIVB’s premier annual international women’s volleyball competition.

Italy Bounces Back
Sarah Fahr made an immediate impact in her first Volleyball Nations League appearance of the season, providing a strong start for Italy with six points in the opening set. She maintained her impressive form throughout the match and finished with 13 points to help anchor the defending champions.
Ekaterina Antropova once again led Italy’s offense with a team-high 21 points. Fourteen of those came through attacks as she consistently delivered in crucial moments to keep Czechia from mounting a comeback.
Stella Nervini also played a vital role by contributing 12 points, giving Italy another reliable scoring option. The balanced offensive effort energized the enthusiastic crowd inside the PhilSports Arena as the defending champions remained in control for most of the match.
Czechia Fights Hard
Despite the defeat, Czechia produced several bright performances against one of the tournament favorites. Twenty-one-year-old opposite spiker Monika Brancuska paced her team with 16 points, all coming from attacks, while demonstrating her scoring ability against Italy’s experienced defense.
Team captain Michaela Mlejnkova also reached double figures with 11 points as Czechia battled through each set. However, the team was unable to slow Italy’s consistent offense and suffered its second defeat in five matches.
The Volleyball Nations League features 18 of the world’s top women’s national teams competing for a place in the Final Round, with only the top eight nations advancing to the championship stage in Macau.
Earlier in the day, the United States opened the Pasig City leg with a commanding straight-set victory over the Dominican Republic, 25-20, 25-19, 25-12, to improve its own tournament record.
