The Philippines strengthened its reputation in international poker after Mike Takayama captured the country’s first-ever Pewter Mega Lion trophy during the recent Asian Poker Tour (APT).

The landmark victory added another major achievement to the growing success of Filipino poker players on the international stage and pushed the combined career earnings of the country’s top competitors beyond $7 million.

Takayama outlasted a stacked field of 136 international entries to secure the prestigious title. He survived one of the tournament’s most difficult stretches after being reduced to only three big blinds at one point during the competition.

The Filipino poker star eventually completed the comeback and claimed TWD 9.76 million, equivalent to approximately PHP 18 million. The payout marked the biggest cash prize of his professional career.

Historic win for Takayama

Takayama’s latest triumph further strengthened his standing as one of the most accomplished poker players in Philippine history. The victory marked his 17th career APT title while also making him the first Filipino ever to win the Pewter Mega Lion trophy.

His rise in the sport came through years of persistence and self-learning after beginning his journey as a poker dealer in local billiards halls. Instead of receiving formal instruction, Takayama studied experienced players closely while gradually building his own understanding of the game through observation and experience.

“Walang nagturo sa akin, ‘yong sarili ko lang ang nag-guide sa akin,” Takayama said. “No one taught me; I guided myself,” he added while reflecting on the path that led to the historic victory.

Takayama has now amassed more than $4 million in career earnings and remains the only Filipino poker player to own a World Series of Poker bracelet. Following his latest championship, he is also moving closer to claiming the top spot on the Philippines’ all-time poker earnings list.

Filipino players continue rise

The country’s growing influence in international poker extends beyond Takayama. Veteran player Lester Edoc has also emerged as one of the Philippines’ most successful poker competitors after building more than $2.7 million in career earnings.

Originally from Baguio, Edoc began by organizing small home games before eventually competing and winning in major tournaments across Taiwan, Vietnam and South Korea. His résumé includes two RVS Cup championships alongside multiple strong finishes on the regional poker circuit.

Meanwhile, Elmer “Kalaquian” Abcede continues to inspire many aspiring Filipino players through his own unlikely rise in professional poker. Abcede, a licensed professional teacher from Bataan and the son of a taxi driver, developed his career through years of persistence while balancing financial struggles early in his journey.

With nearly $300,000 in career earnings, Abcede credited resilience and determination for helping him succeed internationally. “All the hardship and pain I experienced built who I am today,” Abcede said while recalling his early struggles searching for tournament backers at Metro Card Club.

He later found stability through a partnership with Buenas PH, which supports Filipino poker players competing internationally. The collaboration helped provide the logistical support needed for international tournament participation.

Global recognition grows

The recent APT breakthrough highlighted the Philippines’ growing reputation as a major force in skill-based mind sports and competitive poker. Supporting that international push is Buenas PH, a PAGCOR-licensed platform focused on helping professionalize the local poker scene while providing logistical support for Filipino players competing abroad.

“This monumental win is a testament to extraordinary Filipino talent,” said Ellen Joy Almanza, managing consultant of Buenas. “We are proud to have played a part in their journey toward becoming the country’s top-ranked players,” she added.

Buenas PH also emphasized its focus on responsible gaming and identity verification as part of efforts to strengthen the local poker ecosystem. Takayama is now preparing to represent the Philippines at the upcoming World Series of Poker in the United States beginning later this month.
