Gilas Pilipinas women’s 3×3 team continued its impressive run in the 6th Asian Beach Games after defeating Kazakhstan, 16-11, in the quarterfinals Tuesday at the Sanya Sports Centre Gymnasium. The Filipinas leaned on their superior quickness and aggressive inside game to neutralize their taller opponents and punch their ticket to the semifinals.

Facing a physically imposing Kazakhstan side known for perimeter shooting, the Philippine squad executed its game plan to perfection. Rather than engaging in an outside shooting contest, Gilas relentlessly attacked the basket, capitalizing on speed and ball movement to dismantle Kazakhstan’s defense.

Speed and smart execution power Gilas victory

Despite Kazakhstan’s height advantage, the Filipinas confidently relied on quick drives, sharp ball screens, and aggressive penetration to create scoring opportunities. Their pace consistently disrupted Kazakhstan’s defensive positioning, forcing the opposition into uncomfortable situations.

When Kazakhstan briefly threatened after cutting the deficit to 12-11 midway through the match, Gilas responded with poise. Tantoy Ferrer delivered a crucial basket late to extend the lead, while Mikka Cacho sealed the victory with back-to-back points in the closing stretch.

Ferrer emphasized that the team’s scouting report identified speed as their biggest weapon against Kazakhstan’s size.

Semifinal berth boosts Team Philippines campaign

The victory further strengthens Team Philippines’ strong showing in the Asian Beach Games, with Gilas women proving they can contend with some of Asia’s best despite size disadvantages. Their disciplined execution and confidence have made them one of the tournament’s surprise contenders.

Gilas Pilipinas women’s 3×3 squad has once again showcased the fighting spirit of Philippine basketball on the international stage, moving one step closer to a potential medal finish.
