The Philippine women’s national football team must secure a crucial victory over Iran to keep its playoff hopes alive in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. The Filipinas are aiming to finish as one of the two best third-placed teams in the group stage after suffering a 0-3 defeat to South Korea on Thursday, March 5.

The loss marked the Filipinas’ second straight setback in Group A, putting them in a difficult position heading into their final group match. To advance, the Philippines must defeat Iran on Sunday, March 8, and also secure a favorable goal difference compared with other third-placed teams across the tournament groups.

National coach Mark Torcaso acknowledged the disappointment of the loss but stressed the importance of shifting focus to the decisive final group match. The Filipinas remain determined to keep their campaign alive and continue pursuing another appearance on the global stage.

“We are disappointed that we did not get the result we wanted, but we cannot focus on that now,” Torcaso said. “We have got to focus on the next game and what we need to do against Iran.”

Filipinas chase final playoff chance

Only the top two teams from each of the tournament’s three groups automatically advance to the playoffs. The remaining two quarterfinal spots will be awarded to the best third-placed teams, keeping the Philippines mathematically in contention.

South Korea moved to a 2-0 record to share the Group A lead with host Australia. The Australians also secured a quarterfinal place after dominating Iran, 4-0, before an almost sellout crowd.

The Koreans and the Matildas are now widely expected to claim the group’s automatic playoff slots, leaving the Filipinas battling for a third-place qualification scenario.

“We want to just be competitive, and we want to try and get out of the group to go to another World Cup,” Torcaso said. “We know it’s going to be hard, and we’re determined to try and get this team and this country back on the international stage.”

Goal difference could decide fate

The Philippines is currently competing with teams from other groups for a possible third-place berth. India and Uzbekistan are among the nations also fighting to stay alive in the tournament.

India dropped a 1-2 result against Vietnam, while Uzbekistan suffered a 0-3 loss to North Korea but still has matches remaining. These results leave the race for the best third-place finishes wide open heading into the final round of group matches.

Because of the tight standings, the Filipinas must not only win their final match but also aim for a stronger goal difference to improve their ranking among the third-placed teams.

Experienced midfielder Jacklyn Sawicki is expected to return for the decisive clash after missing the match against South Korea due to a bruised ankle. Torcaso opted to rest the veteran player as a precaution while giving younger players opportunities in the midfield.

“Jackie is an important player to our group,” Torcaso said. “It was more about precaution.”

Young midfielder Isabella Pasion stepped in during Sawicki’s absence, gaining valuable experience in the high-stakes tournament environment.

Meanwhile, attention has also been drawn to Iran’s national team due to protests occurring outside the stadium in support of the players amid tensions in the Middle East.
