ZUS Coffee showcased determination and poise as they battled Akari in a grueling Premier Volleyball League match at the FilOil Playtime Centre in San Juan on Thursday, Feb. 12. After falling behind 1-2 in sets, the Thunderbelles regrouped, relying on collective focus and disciplined transitions to regain control. Their balanced approach between veteran guidance and youthful energy turned the tide in crucial moments.

Setter Cloanne Mondonedo directed the offense with composure, creating scoring opportunities for Jovelyn Gonzaga, Chinnie Arroyo, Risa Nogales, and Thea Gagate. Each player contributed to the team’s resilience, helping ZUS Coffee overcome an early deficit and secure a critical win in the conference. The victory ended a two-game skid and marked their first win after an 0-2 start.

ZUS Coffee’s resilience dominates extended match

The Thunderbelles’ capacity to thrive in long, high-pressure matches became evident in the fourth set, as they erased a late deficit and forced a fifth set. A decisive 6-2 run during the fifth set changeover showcased their ability to maintain focus and execute under pressure. Strategic rotations and smart offensive choices allowed ZUS Coffee to dictate tempo and capitalize on Akari’s errors at key moments.

Chinnie Arroyo delivered a calm, decisive finishing strike to secure the match, supported by Gonzaga’s scoring consistency and leadership. Risa Nogales and Thea Gagate added critical points while maintaining disciplined net play. The Thunderbelles’ collective composure highlighted their emerging identity as a team built for extended contests and high-pressure scenarios.

Akari fights valiantly but falls short

Akari kept the match competitive, powered by Ivy Lacsina, who scored 24 points, and Fifi Sharma, who added 14 markers. Ced Domingo and Chenie Tagaod contributed points to maintain pressure in crucial moments. Despite a spirited fifth-set rally, Akari could not overcome ZUS Coffee’s composure and precision in decisive plays. Late miscues, including a critical service error, provided openings that the Thunderbelles seized to close out the match.
