BANGKOK — Filipino boxers failed to reach the finals as Ofelia Magno and Riza Pasuit were both eliminated in the semifinals of their respective weight classes on Tuesday, December 16, at the Chulalongkorn University Sports Center. Magno lost 4-1 to Vietnam’s Ngo Ngoc Linh Chi in the women’s 48-kilogram division, while Pasuit fell 5-0 to Thailand’s Apisada Tantawa in the 60kg class.

With their exits, the Philippine boxing team now has five medals, all bronzes, as they continue to struggle to break past the semifinals stage. Other medalists include Hergie Bacyadan, Nesthy Petecio, and Mark Ashley Fajardo.

Magno and Pasuit show resilience in defeat

Despite her loss, Pasuit remained gracious and reflective. “Siguro talo naman talaga ako, ‘di ko rin masasabi na panalo ako. Nandiyan naman ‘yung mga judge so kung ano ‘yung nakita nila sa laban, siguro ginawa ko naman na ‘yung best ko para manalo,” she said. Her comments reflected her focus on performing her best regardless of the outcome.

She also emphasized the importance of fighting till the end. “Madaming nagsasabi na bago pa umakyat na may result na ‘yung laban pero hindi ko na iniisip iyon, laro pa rin tayo kasi pangit naman na sumurrender tayo nang hindi lumalaban.” Her attitude highlights the determination and sportsmanship that define the Philippine boxing team.

Villegas and the men’s team continue pursuit

Aira Villegas remains the only Filipina still in contention for a gold medal, carrying the hopes of the women’s side. Meanwhile, Eumir Marcial, Weljon Mindoro, Flint Jara, and Jay Brian Baricuatro continue their campaigns on the men’s side.
