Team Philippines is set to appear in leaner numbers at the Southeast Asian Games opening ceremonies on Tuesday, Dec. 9, in Bangkok, but the message from its leadership is firm. The spotlight, according to POC President Abraham Tolentino, belongs to the athletes alone.

Tolentino confirmed that around 140 athletes are marching at Rajamangala National Stadium, well short of the record delegation the country sent to the Games. Several athletes are arriving later than expected, forcing adjustments within the contingent.

Despite the smaller formation, flag bearers Bryan Bagunas and Alex Eala are scheduled to arrive on Monday and take their places at the front of the parade. Their timely arrival ensures the Philippines is properly represented during one of the Games’ most visible moments.

Tolentino made it clear that he will not join the march, stressing that the opening parade should highlight the competitors who trained and earned their spots.

Tolentino emphasizes athlete-first protocol

Tolentino said the ceremony is designed for the athletes and should remain centered on them, especially with the Philippines fielding its largest delegation in history. He reiterated that officials are present to support, not replace, those who will be competing.

He added that the late arrivals are being addressed, with some officials temporarily filling gaps in the formation. However, Tolentino noted that no official should overshadow the athletes who will carry the national colors during the parade.

Thailand sets the stage for a cultural showcase

Host nation Thailand is preparing a program that blends tradition with modern production elements to welcome delegations. The event begins at 6 p.m. local time and formally launches the Games.

The ceremony will also feature introductions of athletes from participating countries, giving each contingent its moment on the regional stage.
