Alas Pilipinas is in promising hands with young stars ready to bring energy and determination to the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship starting Friday, September 12, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Coach Angiolino Frigoni is relying on young talent from the UAAP—Michaelo “Buds” Buddin, Jade Disquitado, Louie Ramirez, and Eco Adajar—along with Josh Ybañez, Leo Ordiales, and Peng Taguibolos. Ramirez represents the NCAA as a two-time MVP from the University of Perpetual Help, highlighting the mix of rising stars on the team.
Ramirez, Buddin, and Disquitado lead the way
Ramirez, 25, who can play as an outside or opposite hitter, will carry the pride of the NCAA as he debuts against Tunisia at 7 p.m. on opening day.
“I’m proud that wherever I go, I still carry the NCAA with me. It means a lot to come from there,” said Ramirez, now with Cignal in the Spikers’ Turf. “This will definitely be one of the best moments of my volleyball career. It’s the world championship.”
Buddin, who grew up in Palawan, views this as a dream come true, adding that playing for Alas Pilipinas is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Disquitado, 21, who was called up to the 2023 SEA Games, brings energy and inspires younger players.
Teamwork and upcoming matches
Setter Eco Adajar, one of the youngest on the team, will manage the plays alongside Owa Retamar, drawing guidance from veteran teammates.
Alas Pilipinas will face No. 23 Egypt on September 16 and Iran on September 18. The final 14-man roster will be confirmed after the preliminary inquiry on September 11.
