University of Santo Tomas continued its winning momentum by sweeping debuting De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, 25-21, 25-21, 30-28, in the 2025 V-League Collegiate Challenge preliminary round on Saturday, August 16, at the Paco Arena Sports and Events Center in Manila.
GBoy De Vega spearheaded the Golden Spikers in the extended 33-minute third set, finishing with 15 points on 13 attacks and two blocks. His down-the-line strike gave UST match point, before Dux Yambao’s crucial denial at the net sealed the straight-sets win.
De Vega credited the team’s improved start and adjustments in training. “Medyo naging effective naman ‘yung mga minor adjustments na pinag-ensayuhan namin the past week. We actually focused on not starting slow; mas naging aggressive kami this time,” he said.

UST controls first two sets with aggression
The Golden Spikers dictated the pace early, relying on an aggressive approach to stay ahead in the opening frames. Benilde leaned on Reymark Betco and Rocky Motol to stay within reach, but UST’s composure and sharper execution proved decisive.
Setter Dux Yambao orchestrated the offense with precision, distributing the ball to De Vega and JJ Macam in transition. Clean passing and quick middle plays allowed Trevor Valera and Sean Cruz to contribute effectively at the net.
Tight third set sealed by defense
Benilde put up a strong fight in the third, with Betco and Motol leading the charge. However, UST’s blocking held firm, with Macam rejecting Betco at a pivotal moment. The Golden Spikers finished with a slim edge in attacks, 40-35, and in blocks, 9-7.
Betco led the Blazers with 13 points, all from attacks, while Motol added 11 markers. Despite their efforts, UST’s balance and resilience carried them to a third consecutive victory, solidifying their hold of the solo lead in the tournament standings.
