Petro Gazz rebounded emphatically from a tough four-set defeat to Kaohsiung Taipower by overwhelming winless Hip Hing in straight sets, 25-8, 25-12, 25-12, to clinch the final quarterfinal spot in the 2025 AVC Women’s Champions League on Tuesday, April 22, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
After falling to the Pool B leaders from Taiwan, 15-25, 16-25, 25-19, 20-25, the Angels responded with a resounding performance to close out the group stage. Their victory not only secured advancement but also set up a high-stakes quarterfinal showdown with Pool A’s top seed, Beijing Baic Motor — one of the most formidable clubs in the tournament.
“This was a great game to find our rhythm as a team, to have fun, and enjoy each other’s play. We just decided to enjoy every point and not dwell on pressure,” said American import Gia Day, who paced Petro Gazz with 18 points, eight digs, and three excellent receptions.

The Angels left little room for doubt, dominating the match from start to finish in a swift one-hour, 13-minute contest. Eight different players entered the scoring column for Petro Gazz, highlighting a well-rounded team effort.
MJ Phillips chipped in with nine points from seven attacks, one block, and one ace. Brooke Van Sickle added eight points, while veterans Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Remy Palma contributed six each. Palma’s three service aces punctuated the team’s assertive serving game.
On the other side, Hip Hing managed just 12 total points from live play — nine attacks, two blocks, and a single ace — while 19 of their points came via Petro Gazz’s unforced errors. Their leading scorers, Sze Man Kwan and Tsz Ching Lam, were held to just three points apiece.
With the group stage complete, all three Philippine squads — Petro Gazz, Creamline, and PLDT — have advanced, but now face daunting quarterfinal assignments against some of Asia’s top-tier volleyball clubs.

Petro Gazz’s next challenge will come on Thursday at 7 p.m., when they take on Chinese powerhouse Beijing Baic Motor. Earlier that day, PLDT will battle Kazakhstan’s Zhetysu at 4 p.m.
Creamline is scheduled to play on Friday against Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima, while Pool B leader Taipower will go up against Vietnam’s VTV Binh Dien Long An.
Though underdogs heading into the quarterfinals, the Filipino squads are banking on crowd support, grit, and home-court advantage to push them through the next phase of Asia’s premier club volleyball competition.
