UE's Historic Losing Streak Reaches 23 Games in UAAP

University of the East’s rebuilding project hit another painful milestone Saturday, September 26. The Red Warriors fell to Far Eastern University, 93-70, extending their losing streak to a staggering 23 games at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The defeat also spoiled Paulo Hubalde’s head coaching debut, a moment UE had hoped would spark a turnaround. Instead, the Tamaraws pulled away late, stretching their lead to as many as 29 points, 88-59, in the fourth quarter.

A Debut Overshadowed by a Growing Skid

UE turned to Hubalde following the departure of former coach Chris Gavina, who reportedly stepped down after a difficult run at the helm. Gavina had taken over in UAAP Season 88, a campaign that ended with the Red Warriors going winless at 0-14.

Hubalde’s first game in charge offered no immediate relief from that trend. UE dropped to 0-3 on the season, with Saturday’s loss extending a skid that traces back to the second round of Season 87.

The streak now spans parts of three UAAP seasons, underscoring just how deep UE’s struggles have run. Saturday’s result marked another step in what has become one of the longest losing runs in recent program history.

FEU Balances the Ledger Behind Balanced Scoring

FEU improved to 1-1 on the season, powered by a balanced offensive attack across its rotation. Mo Konateh led the Tamaraws with 15 points, nine rebounds, and one block in the win.

Kirby Mongcopa also delivered a strong all-around performance, finishing with a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. He added six assists and one steal to round out his stat line.

Jorick Bautista and Janrey Pasaol provided additional scoring punch for the Morayta-based squad. Bautista tallied 13 points, while Pasaol added 12 points, two rebounds, six assists, and two steals.

UE’s offense wasn’t without bright spots despite the lopsided result. Tebol Lagat led the Red Warriors with 20 points and five rebounds, while bench contributor Mariano Tanedo and starter Gene Carillo chipped in 16 and 13 points, respectively.

UE will look to regroup with more than a week off before facing defending champion De La Salle on Sunday, Oct. 4, at the Blue Eagle Gym. FEU, meanwhile, will aim for its second straight win against a streaking University of the Philippines squad on the same day at Ateneo’s home court.
