Mary Joyce Monton will make Philippine cycling history on Sunday when she becomes the first Filipina to compete in the Women Elite race at the 2026 UCI Road World Championships. The historic ride puts her among cycling’s global elite in Montreal, Canada.

The 180.10-kilometer race begins at 8 p.m. Saturday in Montreal, or 9 a.m. Sunday in Manila. It ranks among the toughest single-day tests on the international cycling calendar.

A Milestone Ride for Monton

Monton, 29, enters the race as the reigning PhilCycling National Championships road champion. She also won individual time trial and criterium gold two years ago.

The Los Angeles-based rider’s participation is backed by two of the country’s leading sports bodies. The Philippine Olympic Committee, led by Abraham Tolentino, and the Philippine Sports Commission, chaired by Patrick Gregorio, both supported her bid.

“I’m excited about racing in the world championships, but it would be a difficult race with the world’s elite racing,” Monton said. Her comment reflects the scale of the challenge awaiting her.

That difficulty comes from a stacked international field vying for the world title. Monton will face Demi Vollering of the Netherlands, Kasia Niewiadoma of Poland and Marlen Reusser of Switzerland.

Also in the mix are Paula Blasi of Spain, Franziska Koch of Germany and Kim Le Court of Mauritius. Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky rounds out a field stacked with Olympic and world champions.

Tolentino Hails Historic Milestone

Tolentino, who also serves as PhilCycling president, acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing the Filipina rider. He spoke from Nagoya, Japan, where he is attending the 20th Asian Games.

“We wish her good luck, but her participation alone is already a milestone in itself,” Tolentino said. His remark captured how significant Monton’s presence is for Philippine cycling.

His comment underscores what Monton’s presence represents for a nation with limited history at the elite level of road cycling. Simply qualifying for the start line places her among an elite group worldwide.

A total of 141 riders from 56 countries will take part in Sunday’s race. The depth of the field highlights just how difficult it is for any nation to secure a single spot.
