San Juan City is finding room for football in a place where space is hard to come by. Instead of waiting for sprawling football pitches, the city is turning its existing indoor basketball courts into venues for futsal.

The Philippine Sports Commission, San Juan City Government and Philippine Football Federation formally launched the city’s first Futsal Developmental Programme on Saturday.

The initiative aims to give thousands of young San Juaneños an opportunity to discover and develop their potential in the sport.

The launch brought together San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora, PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio and PFF President John Anthony Gutierrez.

The PSC donated 20 sets of futsal goals and 120 balls, with the equipment set to benefit all 21 barangays in the city.

Futsal finds space in San Juan

Zamora said San Juan’s limited land for football fields does not have to prevent the city from developing players.

“We don’t have land for football fields, but we have plenty of wooden basketball courts spread across 17 barangays,” Zamora said.

With support from the PSC and PFF, those courts can now be transformed into futsal venues.

The mayor described the programme as the city’s first futsal initiative and said it could serve both young players and adults who enjoy football.

The launch attracted 125 children for clinics and friendly competitions. Rafa Merino Rodriguez, head coach of the Philippine women’s national futsal team, led the participants through the activities.

Gregorio stressed the importance of cooperation between local governments, the PSC and national sports associations.

“This is what we want: LGUs collaborating with PSC and the NSA,” Gregorio said.

He added that his vision is to establish dedicated sports clubs for every sport in partnership with local governments and the Department of Education.

Grassroots push gains momentum

The San Juan programme arrives after the Philippines successfully hosted the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup last November.

The event also contributed to the PFF receiving National Sports Association of the Year and International Event of the Year honours at the 7th Philippine Sports Tourism Awards.

Gutierrez said San Juan’s initiative could help make futsal more accessible to children and encourage other cities to develop similar programmes.

“This is the pilot programme to make futsal popular and get more kids to play the beautiful game,” Gutierrez said.

Gregorio also highlighted futsal’s accessibility as a sport for Filipino athletes.

“Walang elite athlete, walang national athlete kung walang grassroots athlete,” he said, adding that futsal can suit Filipinos because it rewards agility and speed rather than height.

The launch was also attended by San Juan Vice Mayor Angelo Agcaoili, councilors Macky Mathay, Herbert Chua and Francine Gil, special assistant to the mayor Rocco Zamora, and PFF technical consultant coach Bob Salvacion.

San Juan is now looking at the possibility of staging an inter-barangay futsal tournament. The programme could eventually expand into inter-city competitions, giving the sport another pathway into the country’s grassroots sporting system.
