With the game on the line and defensive pressure suffocating, Adrian Nocum delivered the ultimate statement for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Modern PBA endgame play usually demands handing the ball to an overseas import, but head coach Yeng Guiao placed the outcome squarely in the hands of his rising homegrown star.

Nocum made that faith pay off, carving through a wall of defenders in the final seconds to sink an ice-cold, game-winning drive, securing a dramatic 98–97 victory over the Magnolia Hotshots in Friday’s PBA Governors’ Cup action at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The clutch bucket capped a career-defining night for Nocum, who exploded for a career-high 31 points and powered Rain or Shine to its third consecutive victory.

With 24 seconds remaining and Rain or Shine trailing 97–96 following an Ian Sangalang layup, Guiao mapped out the final play with total faith in his guard. Rather than forcing the ball to import Aaron Fuller—who was held to just 14 points, well below his pre-game average—Guiao gave Nocum the green light to attack the rim or kick it out to open shooters.

Nocum chose to take charge, driving fearlessly through a phalanx of Magnolia defenders to put the Elasto Painters ahead for good. The win was sealed when Magnolia import KJ Buffen missed a desperate drive at the buzzer.

“Nagtitiwala naman kami du’n sa diskarte niya. So kung mai-dra-drive niya, mayroon siya tira, desisyon niya iyon,” Guiao said of his directive during the final timeout. “Kung nag-collapse iyon at hirap siya, naka-spread out naman iyung mga p’wedeng tumira din. So, actually, iyun nga, nag-i-improve ‘yung decision-making niya, mas consistent siya ngayon.”

The victory was far from easy. Rain or Shine fought back from an early 12-point deficit in a grind-it-out battle that featured eight deadlocks and nine lead changes. Despite committing 17 turnovers and shooting a cold 11-of-39 from three-point territory, the Elasto Painters’ core showed remarkable composure down the stretch.

Magnolia fell short despite a monster effort from Buffen, who posted 31 points, 17 rebounds, and five assists. Zavier Lucero, Ian Sangalang, Paul Lee, and Mark Barroca each added at least 11 points, but the Hotshots dropped to 1–3 overall heading into Sunday’s matchup against Barangay Ginebra.

For Guiao, surviving close contests is invaluable for his youth-laden squad.

“Magandang experience para sa mga bata na natututo sila na manalo sa mahigpitang laban,” Guiao noted. “Sa amin, napakahalaga ng experience na iyon—natututo sila.”
