Philly Unstoppable? LeBron Joins Embiid & Brown in 76ers Stunner

After publicly admitting that he seriously considered retirement, LeBron James announced Friday that he is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for his final run at an NBA championship. The 41-year-old superstar is agreeing to a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option, according to Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul.

This decision marks a dramatic financial shift for James, who earned nearly $53 million with the Los Angeles Lakers last season. As he enters a record-breaking 24th season, this will serve as the final free agency choice of his legendary career.

In a series of posts on X, James addressed his decision-making and admitted he initially thought he was done playing after the 2025-26 season. “I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game,” he wrote.

LeBron James announced he will join the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year deal, ending speculation about the final chapter of his NBA career.

After deciding he still truly loves the game and has more to give, James chose Philadelphia as his fourth NBA team to search for a fifth title. He hopes to break a 43-year championship drought for the 76ers, much like he erased a 52-year streak without a title for Cleveland in 2016.

“This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point?” James posted on X. “I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.”

James added that he believes he can help turn the 76ers into a championship squad while energizing a new fan base on his final journey. Rich Paul expressed that his client was prioritizing “basketball happiness,” which Philadelphia interpreted as a clear chance to win.

The Aggressive Recruitment Campaign and Roster Pitch

Bob Myers, president of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, appeared on Paul’s “Game Over” podcast alongside Max Kellerman to make a digital pitch to James. “If he was here, I’d say, ‘I honestly believe this is your best chance to win,'” Myers said during the broadcast.

The 76ers pursued James from all angles behind the scenes to secure his commitment. Sixers president of basketball operations Mike Gansey, a former Cavaliers executive who played against James in high school, stayed in constant communication with Paul.

At the same time, a trio of Philadelphia players—Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and newly acquired Jaylen Brown—worked on James directly. That recruitment effort was led by Maxey, a fellow Klutch client who has referred to James as a “big brother.”

James now returns to an emergent Eastern Conference that includes two of his former suitors, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat. The 76ers went 45-37 last season before being swept 4-0 by the New York Knicks in the second round of the playoffs.

Philadelphia has experienced a 43-year title drought since 1983, recording only two other conference finals appearances and one NBA Finals appearance in that span. The furthest the franchise has advanced during the Joel Embiid era was a Game 7 heartbreak against Toronto in 2019.

Betting Odds Surge as Free Agency Speculation Ends

Following the announcement, DraftKings Sportsbook moved Philadelphia’s NBA Finals odds from 20-1 down to +900. The team’s odds to win the Eastern Conference also jumped from +750 to +370 after opening at 30-1 to sign James.

The decision puts an end to weeks of wild speculation fueled by media appearances, podcast whiteboards, and sports radio callers. Viral posts on X had tracked surreptitious photos of James across the country, framing every location as a potential destination clue.

All of the speculation muted the fallout of James leaving the Lakers after an eight-year tenure that included the 2020 championship. Last season, James took on a supporting role alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves under coach JJ Redick during a late 16-2 run.

Instead of finishing his career in Los Angeles, James is taking his talents to the City of Brotherly Love. Philadelphia was part of his early journey, back when he played at the Palestra gymnasium as a high school junior.

James previously praised the local crowd after scoring 12 fourth-quarter points in a Lakers win in December. “One thing you know about Philly fans—they don’t care about anybody besides their home teams, and I respect and I love that,” James said.
