PH Tennis Trailblazer Alexandra Eala Set for Star Turn at Upgraded Singapore Open

Alexandra Eala is coming home to where it all began — only this time, she’s not a junior chasing a dream. She’s the headline act.

The Philippines’ highest-ranked WTA player in history and current World No. 32 is set to return to Singapore this September for the newly upgraded Singapore Tennis Open (STO). The tournament has officially leveled up from a WTA 250 event to a WTA 500 showcase, running from September 21 to 27, 2026, at the OCBC Arena at The Kallang and anchoring the opening of the WTA’s Asian Swing.

Eala’s presence in the field instantly makes it one of the most-watched stories in Southeast Asian sport.

A Homecoming Years in the Making

Eala’s connection to Singapore runs deep. She first competed in the city-state as a junior player at the WTA Future Stars, long before her name became synonymous with Philippine tennis history.

Then came 2025, when Eala broke barriers no Filipino had broken before her. She became the first player from the Philippines to reach the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event and the first to advance to the round of 16 at the US Open — milestones that transformed her from promising prospect to legitimate top-32 threat. Now she’s bringing that elevated status back to the country where her international journey first took shape.

“Singapore has a really special place in my heart, and I still remember competing there at the WTA Future Stars as a junior player,” Eala said. “I have always enjoyed playing in Singapore because it’s so close to home, and it’s great to have a WTA 500 event in Southeast Asia! I’m looking forward to enjoying a great week at the Singapore Tennis Open.”

For Filipino tennis fans, her return adds a deeply personal storyline to a tournament already generating buzz.

Singapore’s Big Leap Sets the Stage for a Star-Studded Field

Eala’s star turn arrives at the perfect moment. The STO’s jump to WTA 500 status places it among an elite group of just 18 WTA 500 events worldwide, putting Singapore alongside marquee tournaments in cities like Brisbane and Charleston and marking a major step up in prize money, ranking points and international prestige from last year’s WTA 250 edition.

As a key stop on the WTA’s Asian Swing, the tournament plays a pivotal role in the back half of the season, when top players jockey for position ahead of the year-end championships. That makes Singapore a high-stakes proving ground during a decisive stretch of the tour.

This year’s edition features a 28-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw, with players competing for a prize pool of approximately $1.2 million. The action opens with two days of qualifying matches on September 19 and 20, followed by seven days of main-draw competition from September 21 to 27.

Organizers expect the upgraded status to draw a stronger, more competitive international field, with more player announcements still to come. For now, though, Eala’s name alone is enough to make this year’s Singapore Tennis Open must-watch tennis.

Tickets are on sale now, with single-session passes starting at just $8 during a four-week early bird promotion offering 10 percent off before standard pricing kicks in on July 27.
