Hongtaek Kim delivered a commanding performance to open the International Series Japan, firing a seven-under-par 64 on Thursday, April 2, at Caledonian Golf Club. The South Korean golfer immediately set the tone in the season-opening event of The International Series, capitalizing on favorable conditions to move ahead of a tightly packed field.

The early lead carries significant weight, with players chasing valuable ranking points that could ultimately secure a place in the LIV Golf League. With pressure already building, Kim’s fast start places him in a strong position heading into the next rounds.

Kim takes control with strong driving and clutch scoring

Starting on the 10th hole, Kim showcased precision and composure throughout his round, finishing with an eagle, six birdies, and just one bogey. His accuracy off the tee allowed him to consistently attack greens, setting up multiple scoring opportunities that he converted with confidence.

Momentum shifted firmly in his favor when he drained an eagle on the par-five sixth, a highlight that energized his round. He then closed in style with back-to-back birdies on holes eight and nine, underlining his control and consistency from start to finish.

The 32-year-old credited his driving as a key factor behind his success, noting how it positioned him well for greens in regulation. His strong showing adds to an already impressive résumé that includes an Asian Tour win in 2024 and multiple Korean PGA Tour titles.

Chasing pack keeps pressure on as leaderboard tightens

Despite Kim’s standout round, the competition remains close, with Younghan Song and Thailand’s Poom Saksansin both carding six-under 65s. Song relied on a bogey-free round and familiarity with the course, while Poom leaned on steady putting and composed play to stay within striking distance.

A group at five-under 66, including John Catlin, Lin Yuxin, Tatsunori Shogenji, Wang Wei-hsuan, and Yongjun Bae, ensures that the leaderboard remains crowded. With several proven contenders just a few shots back, the battle for position is expected to intensify as conditions evolve.

With LIV Golf qualification points on the line, every round carries added importance, and early momentum could prove decisive. Kim may have the lead now, but with multiple challengers closing in, the International Series Japan is shaping up to be a tightly contested event.
