Hongtaek Kim tightened his grip on the International Series Japan, taking the halfway lead after delivering another composed round at Caledonian Golf Club. The Korean golfer followed up his opening 64 with a 67 to sit at 11-under-par heading into the weekend.

The strong showing puts Kim one shot clear of Japan’s Shugo Imahira and India’s Karandeep Kochhar, both of whom surged into contention with impressive rounds of 65. The tournament marks the opening event of the season on The International Series and the third stop on the Asian Tour calendar.

Kim overcomes early struggles to stay in control

Kim’s round did not begin smoothly as he struggled with his ball striking early and dropped a shot on the third hole. Despite the shaky start, he quickly regrouped and showcased his experience by making key adjustments that steadied his play.

He went on to produce five birdies without another bogey, allowing him to regain control and separate himself from the chasing pack. His ability to adapt mid-round proved crucial in maintaining his position at the top.

With rain expected over the weekend, Kim emphasized the importance of accuracy off the tee and patience around the greens. He believes managing course conditions will be key to closing out the tournament.

Imahira, Kochhar and Jang keep pressure on leader

Imahira delivered one of the standout performances of the day, eagling two par fives to stay within striking distance. The accomplished Japanese player, a multiple-time Japan Golf Tour winner, is banking on home advantage as he eyes a breakthrough international victory.

Kochhar matched that consistency with a bogey-free run through two rounds, underlining the strength of his iron play and steady putting. His clean card has positioned him firmly in the title race as the tournament heads into its final stages.

Yubin Jang also made a strong push with a brilliant 63, the lowest round of the week so far. The Korean fired eight birdies to move within two shots of the lead, signaling his intent to challenge despite missing out on LIV Golf League retention last season.

Elsewhere, veteran Jeev Milkha Singh made his first cut on the Asian Tour since 2024 after finishing at one-under-par, while Richard T. Lee’s streak of 25 consecutive cuts came to an end following a second-round 73.
