Philippine Sports Hall of Fame set to enshrine new icons in historic Rizal Memorial rite

The Philippine Sports Hall of Fame is set to welcome its fifth batch of inductees on May 20 at the historic Rizal Memorial Coliseum. The ceremony will honor Filipino athletes and coaches who have achieved remarkable success in regional, continental, and international competitions.

Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Patrick Gregorio and Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino led the seven-member selection committee. They reviewed nominations from 75 distinguished athletes and coaches to finalize the latest enshrinees.

Rigorous selection process ensures deserving inductees

The screening process involved veteran sports journalists who meticulously evaluated the nominees’ accomplishments. Quinito Henson (Philippine Star), Al Mendoza (Business Mirror), Dodo Catacutan (Spin.ph), Jun Lomibao (Business Mirror), and Ignacio Dee (Manila Standard) ensured that each candidate met the stringent Hall of Fame criteria.

Joining Gregorio and Tolentino on the committee were Games and Amusement Board Chairman Atty. Francisco Rivera, Xavier Virata of Ayala Foundation Inc., Vovinam Federation of the Philippines secretary general Jose “Jop” Malonzo, and Pilipinas Curling secretary general Jarryd Bello. The panel collectively selected the most deserving athletes and coaches for enshrinement.

Celebrating a legacy of Filipino sporting excellence

Since its inaugural induction in 2010, the Hall of Fame has enshrined 47 icons, including Simeon Toribio, Miguel White, Caloy Loyzaga, Ceferino Garcia, Pancho Villa, Gabriel Elorde, and Teofilo Yldefonso. Later classes honored Mona Sulaiman, Eugene Torre, Olivia Coo, Lydia de Vega-Mercado, Paeng Nepomuceno, Robert Jaworski, Roel Velasco, Leopoldo Serrantes, and Paulino Alcantara.

Eligibility for the Hall of Fame requires Filipino athletes, coaches, and trainers to have achieved podium finishes in the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games, Olympic Games, or World Championships, or to have earned world titles in professional or amateur competition.

The May 20 induction promises to celebrate individual achievement while reaffirming the enduring legacy of Philippine sports on the global stage. Fans and the sporting community alike will witness another generation of Filipino legends being immortalized.
