The Philippines is heading back to the global stage after delivering a crucial 2-0 win over Uzbekistan in the Women’s Asian Cup playoffs on Thursday, March 19.

Goals from Angela Beard and Jaclyn Sawicki in a six-minute burst after halftime powered the Filipinas to qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Despite controlling much of the first half and registering multiple attempts, the Philippines struggled to find the breakthrough before the interval. That changed quickly in the second half as the Filipinas capitalized on their attacking pressure.

Second-half surge seals qualification

Beard opened the scoring just two minutes after the restart, timing her run perfectly before unleashing a left-footed volley that struck the crossbar and went in. The goal came off a well-placed delivery from Jael-Marie Guy on the right flank.

Guy turned provider once more minutes later, sending in another cross that Sawicki met with a header to double the lead in the 52nd minute. The quickfire goals ultimately put the result beyond doubt.

The final whistle sparked wild celebrations as substitutes rushed onto the field to join the starting squad, marking the Philippines’ second consecutive appearance at the Women’s World Cup.

Filipinas prove they belong on global stage

The road to qualification was far from straightforward. The Philippines finished third in Group A behind South Korea and Australia, needing to wait until the final group-stage results to confirm their place in the knockout rounds.

Only six automatic World Cup slots were available through the tournament. While quarterfinal winners secured direct qualification, the losing teams were forced into playoffs to fight for the remaining spots.

Head coach Mark Torcaso made the decision to rotate his squad during the quarterfinals, a move that led to a heavy loss against Japan. However, the return of the team’s core lineup in the playoffs proved decisive.

“It’s another step in the right direction for Philippines women’s football,” defender Hali Long said. “It just shows that we belong on the world stage.”

With qualification secured, the Filipinas now turn their focus toward preparing for another opportunity to compete among the best teams in the world.
