Savouge turned a second-set stumble into a decisive comeback, overpowering Alpha Insurance 25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 25-16 in the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference prelims Sunday, March 1, at the FilOil Playtime Centre. The victory gave the Spin Doctors their second straight win, showing resilience and tactical adjustments throughout the match. The team capitalized on Alpha Insurance’s errors while maintaining steady execution on both offense and defense.
After dropping the second set, Savouge regrouped with sharp focus, tightening their defense and rediscovering the offensive rhythm that had propelled them to a strong opening-set win. Alpha Insurance briefly drew level by exploiting reception lapses and disrupting first-ball executions, testing the Spin Doctors’ composure. The Protectors applied pressure, but Savouge responded immediately and effectively.

Mark Calado and Louie Ramirez spearheaded the resurgence in the third set, combining power hits and precise attacks that dismantled the Protectors’ defensive schemes. The Spin Doctors maintained control early in the pivotal frame and never relinquished it.
Calado delivered 20 points on 19 attacks and a block, thriving in his role as opposite spiker. Ramirez added 16 points on 12 attacks, two aces, and two kill blocks, while Shawie Caritativo contributed 15 points, two blocks, one ace, six excellent digs, and 14 excellent receptions. Joeven Dela Vega made his debut off the bench, adding two points.
“For the team, nandun pa rin kami sa point na nangangapa pa rin. We’re still finding the right first six, so talagang pinasok ko lang ngayon ‘yung mga players ko kung sino ba talaga dapat,” said Spin Doctors head coach Sydney Calderon.
“I think as early as now, nakikita namin kaagad kung anong adjustments ang gagawin namin moving forward for our remaining games this season,” Calderon added.
Spin Doctors assert dominance
Savouge’s wing spikers and middle rotation maintained consistent execution throughout the match. The team capitalized on Alpha Insurance errors and sustained pressure at the net to cement the win. Service play also gave Savouge the edge, holding a 4-1 advantage while out-attacking the Protectors 58-43.
The Spin Doctors will face VNS Always Bright Laticrete on Wednesday at 3 p.m., aiming to extend their winning streak to three games.
